Austin County's Guide To Valentine's Day Romance

A LOCAL LOVE STORY

In the early '70s, amidst the buzz of college life and part-time jobs, Carolyn and Joe Bilski's story unfolded, not in the algebra class they shared at Blinn College but at a teen dance in Coushatte Hall. Using the classic "Don't I know you from somewhere?" line, Joe took Carolyn's hand. Together, they danced into a future where shared values in faith, family and a yin-yang balance of personalities laid the foundation for enduring love.

Marking half a century together, the Bilskis' union began with their 1974 Sealy Catholic Church wedding and saw them transition from Houston careers to a family-focused life in Sealy.

"Our secret to 50 years? Prayer, patience and picking the important battles only," Carolyn said. "We have always supported each other's interests from Joe's softball and demanding work as a lineman, including lots of overtime and trips for hurricane and ice duty, leaving me with the kids. Joe has been very supportive of my political interest in local government and other community groups."

HOW VALENTINE'S GOT ITS GROOVE
The romantic hues of Valentine's Day derive from ancient traditions. Historians trace its roots to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, a jubilant occasion that welcomed spring with fertility ceremonies and the unconventional matchmaking of couples through a lottery. This antiquity-honored festival may well be the predecessor of today's day of love but is celebrated today with vastly different displays of affection.

As the big day approaches, the heart of Austin County beats in sync with the rhythms of romance, offering an array of activities and dining experiences to ensure the day of love is as special as the feelings meant to convey. Our suggestions range from free and low-cost to high- ticket to spending time together. We even think men would like to receive and participate in some of these.

Romantic Proposal Done Right
If you are a sucker for romance and want one more true life story of how to get romance right, read this inspirational recount of Sealy resident Russell Rainwater's airport proposal to his girlfriend and how it became a viral sensation on social media.

With the collaborative efforts of Houston's Hobby Airport and Southwest Airlines, the simple gesture of Rainwater holding a sign at the airport — escalated into a grand event featuring cupcakes, champagne, live music and dancing.

With Rainwater on a bent knee holding a custom-made ring and a cheering crowd to back him, Terri Jo Youngblood was greeted with an unforgettable proposal followed by dancing. Rainwater expressed that his now fiancé was somewhat in disbelief. She had an inkling it was coming but had no idea when. "The whole experience was overwhelming, bringing tears to her eyes and a smile to her face.
